About Us

Our Tribal Belly Dance group branched off from the Chippenham-based troupe Raqs Romany in March 2008 with the aim of teaching absolute beginners' classes in Malmesbury.
Since then we have performed at numerous venues around Wiltshire as well as staging our usual spectacular belly dance variety night in the annual Malmesbury Carnival (in collaboration with Raqs Romany) and we have grown both in numbers and skill. Some of the past performance venues include the Star Inn in Hullavington, the Beehive Pub in Swindon and haflas (belly dance parties) in Wiltshire, Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire.
Classes are run in an informal and friendly atmosphere near Malmesbury in the Corston Village Hall- recently furnished with full-length mirrors.
Practice sessions are lead by a tutor with over nine years of experience of tribal fusion belly dance, occasionally in combination with other dancers in the group to demonstrate various fusion styles and dance techniques.
The aim of beginners' classes is to teach the basic techniques of stretches, safe dance posture and to give students a wide vocabulary of key tribal belly dance moves, so that they are able to put them together into a dance routine, get a taste for the art of improvisation and progress to the next level.
Belly dance classes are great way to make new friends, learn some seductive moves, have fun as you're getting fit and toning up your core muscles and it's a brilliant excuse to dress up! And don't worry, you don't have to expose your belly. There is no pressure to perform either! Our aim is to have fun and to share dance ideas and inspiration. We encourage and support each other when it comes to performing, but we know that it can be scary, so if you don't feel up for it that's fine!
We also invite local musicians and artists to participate in our shows, whenever possible.
For example, the Malmesbury Juggling Club took part in our Carnival show in 2008, local artist Phillip Kingsbury designed all our artwork for the 2009, 2010 and 2011 Carnival performances and we like to collaborate with local folk & blues guitar-man Roy Poulton and Malmesbury-born musician Amy Kaelyn.
